ERAS Application Timeline 2026-2027: Official Dates & Week-by-Week Checklist
Published April 16, 2026 • Updated May 21, 2026
“Submit early” is the most common ERAS advice, and by itself it is nearly useless. Early relative to what? The cycle has at least seven meaningful deadlines, and missing any of them can quietly cost you interviews even if your application is otherwise strong. This guide walks through the 2026-2027 cycle week by week, with the dates that actually matter and what to do in each window.
Dates below reflect the official AAMC and ECFMG 2027 Match ERAS timeline (last updated May 2026). Verify the current schedule on the AAMC’s official ERAS residency-applicant page and ECFMG’s MyIntealth portal before you commit to a timeline.
| Milestone Date | Key Activity & Action Required |
|---|---|
| June 24, 2026 | Residency Tokens Available & MyERAS Registration Opens: Purchase your $185 token on ECFMG's MyIntealth portal to register on MyERAS. Start requesting letters of recommendation (LoRs) and building your application. |
| September 2, 2026 | MyERAS Submission Window Opens: You can officially certify and submit your application starting at 9:00 a.m. ET. Once certified, your application content is locked. |
| September 11, 2026 | ECFMG Document Upload Deadline: Upload all supporting files (MSPE, transcripts, photos) by this date to guarantee transmission to MyERAS before programs gain access. |
| September 15, 2026 | NRMP Match Registration Opens: Register on the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) site to participate in the Match. |
| September 23, 2026 | Residency Programs Access Applications: Programs begin reviewing all submitted applications at 9:00 a.m. ET. Submissions between Sept 2 and Sept 23 are shown with the same stamp. |
| January 29, 2027 | NRMP Standard Registration Deadline: Late fees apply to NRMP registration after this date. |
| March 3, 2027 | NRMP Rank Order List (ROL) Deadline: Final certification deadline for Rank Order Lists. |

Spring - early June: the pre-opening window
This is the period where applications are won and lost, not the week before certification. Three things to finish by the end of June:
Request your letters of recommendation. Send the ask early in the cycle at the latest. LoR writers are faculty with their own deadlines, and a writer who agrees early but does not upload until October has effectively declined. When you ask, give each writer a one-page packet: your CV, a short paragraph on the specialty and why them, and a realistic upload deadline of August 15 - which builds in a multi-week buffer before submission opens. All letters are submitted by your authors through the AAMC Letter Writer Portal.
Order your MSPE and transcript now. For IMGs, document upload is handled through ECFMG’s new MyIntealth Applicant Portal. If your school participates in the MyIntealth Entity Portal, they must upload your MSPE and transcript directly. If they do not, you must upload them yourself via MyIntealth. Note that MSPEs take up to 5 business days to process, and transcript transfer requests from ECFMG Certification can take up to 8 business days. Waiting until September is how documents go missing.
One more change: USMLE transcript requests for ERAS must be initiated separately via the FSMB portal, and then retrieved by selecting “Initiate Score Retrieval” in the Documents section of MyERAS.
Draft your personal statement and meaningful experiences. Not polish - draft. The writing improves in the gap between drafts, and that gap is three weeks or it is nothing. Identify your Most Meaningful Experiences early so you can build your personal statement around them. Our guide on writing meaningful experiences walks through the structure that works.
June 24: MyERAS opens & ECFMG tokens released
On June 24, 2026, the ERAS 2027 residency season officially opens. Residency tokens become available through ECFMG’s new MyIntealth Applicant Portal for a non-refundable fee of $185 (valid for this season only). Once purchased, you use this token to register on the AAMC MyERAS website.
At this point, you can start building your application, assigning LoR slots, and drafting your experiences. Finish your entry early using our ERAS Experience Examples to ensure you're hitting the Context/Action/Outcome framework PDs expect.
Special Specialty Rules: Emergency Medicine (EM) and Obstetrics & Gynecology (Ob/Gyn) programs utilize ResidencyCAS instead of ERAS for the 2027 cycle. IMGs applying to these specialties must complete the ECFMG Residency Application Support Form and pay a separate processing fee to obtain access, allowing ECFMG to transmit their transcripts and MSPEs.
Dean's Office Transition: For Canadian graduates graduating on or after July 1, 2025, ERAS Support Services at ECFMG now acts as the designated Dean's office (previously managed by CaRMS).
September 2: submission opens & MyERAS entry locks
Starting September 2, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. ET, you can officially begin submitting and certifying your application in MyERAS.
Crucial Warning: The moment you click “Certify and Submit,” your main application details (biographical info, education history, and your 10 experiences) are locked forever. They cannot be edited. Take your time—submitting on September 2 offers absolutely no advantage over submitting on September 22, as programs cannot see any submissions yet.
September 23: programs begin accessing applications
On September 23, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. ET, residency programs gain access to all submitted applications.
Any application certified and submitted between September 2 and September 23 is timestamped as “September 23” for program directors. This creates a level playing field. However, to guarantee that your MSPE, transcripts, and other supporting documents are fully processed and transmitted by ECFMG on opening day, ECFMG’s official recommended upload deadline is September 11, 2026.
Documents uploaded after September 11 may not be processed by September 23, meaning programs will view an incomplete file. Applications submitted after September 23 are timestamped late, putting you at a significant disadvantage as rolling interview invitations begin immediately.
September: program signaling
Program signals are how you tell a program they are a priority. Token counts vary widely by specialty - anywhere from 2 (some combined IM tracks) to 30 (Orthopedic Surgery, Urology), with most specialties in the 5-15 range. Check your specialty’s current allocation on the AAMC’s program signaling page before you plan your list.
The common mistake is spending signals on reach programs to “give yourself a chance.” Signals do not move you from a no to a yes at a program where you were never competitive. They convert borderline into interview at programs where your metrics are already in range. Spend most of your signals on programs where you fit and have a plausible chance; save one or two for true top-choice reaches.
If you are applying in Urology, Dermatology, or Plastic Surgery (Integrated), your letter writers will fill out a standardized evaluation form for the 2027 season instead of writing a free-text letter. Tell them in advance - the form takes about twenty minutes and they will not appreciate finding out in September.
October - January: interview season
The first interview invites go out within days of programs getting access. Respond to invites within hours, not days - most programs use first-come scheduling and the best slots go in the first hour. Set up SMS or push notifications from your email client for anything from an ERAS program domain.
On thank-you notes: the data is genuinely mixed, and program directors in survey studies consistently say thank-you notes do not change their rank. Send one short, specific email within 48 hours if it is natural to you - and do not send to programs with a stated “no contact” policy, which is a real filter in a handful of specialties.
IMG-specific timing notes
If you are applying as an IMG, three additional dependencies layer onto this timeline.
ECFMG certification & Status Report: Most programs filter on ECFMG certified status at the ERAS review stage. If your Step 2 CK result is pending in September, your application will be screened out by programs with a hard filter. ECFMG Status Reports are automatically transmitted as part of the Token fee, but they do not contain your USMLE scores (which must be requested via FSMB).
Document Processing Times: Because document verification is processed manually, it takes time. ECFMG recommends a target deadline of September 11, 2026 for all document uploads to guarantee transmission by September 23. Medical school transcripts do not auto-transfer from ECFMG Certification and can take up to 8 business days to transfer. Medical school-uploaded MSPEs and applicant-uploaded copies (if the school does not participate in the MyIntealth Entity Portal) take up to 5 business days to verify. Photographs (conforming to passport specifications, max 150 KB JPEG) take up to 24 hours to transmit.
Visa timing & US Clinical Experience: J-1 visas are faster to obtain via ECFMG but carry a home-country return requirement. H-1B visas require passing USMLE Step 3 before a program can file. If you need H-1B sponsorship, sit Step 3 in the spring so results are in hand before rank order lists are certified. Additionally, US clinical experience must be completed and documented by late August to show up on your September application.
Timeline mistakes that quietly cost interviews
- Asking for LoRs in August. Every faculty member you want has already committed most of their letter slots by July. Late asks get rushed, formulaic letters.
- Waiting for Step 2 CK before submitting. You can certify with Step 2 pending if you have a test date. The score posts to your application automatically when released. A three-week delay waiting for a result you could report as pending is pure self-inflicted damage.
- Treating MyERAS as autosaved. It is not. Long-form fields have silently dropped edits for multiple cycles. Draft offline, paste in, save immediately.
- Burning signals on dream programs. Signals are highest-leverage in your fit band, not above it.
What to do this week
Open a calendar. Put your LoR ask deadline, your MyERAS account creation date (June 24, 2026), your ECFMG document upload target (September 11, 2026), and your submission date (by September 23, 2026) on it today. Timelines fail silently because no one is tracking them; a calendar turns silent failures into noisy reminders.
